Long Black Veil (4/4)

G

Ten years ago,  on a cold, dark night

                  D                                       C              G

There was some one killed 'neath the town hall light

G

There were few at the scene but they all agreed

        D                                  C         G

That man who ran looked a lot like me

                  C                 G              C              G

She walks these hills   in a long black veil

                  C            G                        C                 G

She visits my grave  while the night winds wail

           C           G          C          G     C           G        D    G

Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

       G

The judge said son, what is your alibi?

                    D                                C                          G

If you were somewhere else, then you don't have to die

   G

I spoke not a word though it meant my life

             D                            C                G

I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife

       G

The scaffold was high and eternity was near

       D                                   C               G

She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear

       G

But sometimes at night when the cold winds moan

       D                              C                 G

In a long black veil, she cries o'r my bones
